diversed tourists

Follow me. I'll show you around the place. This is the main information desk which is manned by 21 staff members, 12 of them are full salaried workers and the rest are volunteers. They work on 8 hour shifts around the clock. Right now, as you can see, there are 12 of them. We have more staff members during the day as they are more people. They speak different languages to cater to diversed tourists.

Is the above correct?
Thanks.

Thanks, Yoong Liat. Could you also help me see why diversed is wrong? The context is the Beijing Olympics.

Hi New2grammar

There is no such word as 'diversed'.

'Diverse' means 'varied or dfifferent': Students from counrtries as diverse as Columbia and Lithuania use Cambridge textbooks when they learn English.

Based on the above definition, you cannot use 'diverse tourists' in your sentence.

Clive, Does it mean diverse tourists is OK with you?

Hi,

I wouldn't say it's wrong, but it's not a common collocation.

I'd say something like They speak various languages to cater to tourists from many different countries.
