Distribution of adjective

Can anyone help answer this question, or direct me to some resources: how (aside from context) do I determine whether an adjective modifies only the first noun of a series or each noun in the series? The structure is as follows:

[Adj.] [Noun 1], [Noun 2], or [Noun 3]. The sentence might make sense either way, though it means something very different under each construction. I am looking for a rule of grammar that would provide some guidance, but I am coming up empty, perhaps because I don't know what to call this--distribution of adjective? If it helps, the adjective seems to me to be a limiting adjective, and the question is whether it limits just noun 1 or whether it limits all three. I would appreciate any help you can give, even if it is just to check a particular source or to tell me what this is called. Thank you all!
