Distract yourself from everything that's been happening

A: I've been painting for two years now.

B: Okay. So have you used it as a way to distract yourself from everything that's been happening?

(A has recently lost his mother after a year-long battle with cancer.)

1) Is the bold-face part correct and natural with the added information in mind?

2) Is it natural to say "everything"?

3) Do you find "that's been happening" more appropriate than "that's happened" here?

4) Do you prefer "happening" or "going on" for this context?

Thank you.
