Distingusih between formal and informal words

i study for writing acrademic essay.

So i need to distinguish formal and informal words before writing essay, but I don't know well what is formal word or opposite. I already divided a litter formal from informal by myself, but I cannot sure that it is corrcet or not.

Could you check it and add more information?

I would reverse stop and cease as "cease" is more formal than "stop."

I would reverse "ask" and "inquire" for the same reason.
