Distinguish

Hello!

Wold you please tell me if I'm right with my interpretation?

I think the verb distinguish is used incorrectly in the following sentence since we usually distinguish A from B and not merely sth.
I suggest using the words understand or comprehend.

I am incapable of distinguishing the subtleties and delicate points of the literary works of all peoples and nations, both ancient or modern.

Thanks in advance for your comments.
