The lecture method of instruction pervades institutions of higher learning in North America and in many areas throughout the world. It is considered to be a cost-effective method of instruction and "the most dramatic way of presenting to the largest number of students a critical distillation of ideas and information in a subject in the shortest possible time" (Elsen, cited in Gage and Berliner, 1984, p. 454).
I can't make a good connection with the word 'distillation' even though I've explored its meaning, in particular in the above context, several times in several dictionaries.
Could you please suggest an alternative word which can be replaced with it with the least loss of meaning?
