Distance yourself in this context

The runner in first position had another 5 laps to really distance himself from the runner in 2nd. I don't think 'distance from' is correct in the context

It's true that "distance oneself from" is normally used figuratively rather than literally, but I find this example just about acceptable. I don't know whether everyone would agree.
