Distance

She's a beauty from a distance.

I saw flashes of lightning in the distance.

1) why do we use different articles before distance?

2) why don't we use the before flashes and before lightning, although we talk about certain flashes and certain lightning?

They mean pretty much the same thing. I seemed to sense a difference between them at first, and I started to explain it, but it turned out to be vague to me. I will say that we say "the" with "from" - From a distance and we use "the" with "in" - In the distance.

If you observe her from far away, she appears to be beautiful.
This focuses on where the observer is.

Where did you observe it from? From a distance.
How did it look? It didn't look bad from a distance, but it didn't look nice after I moved closer to it.
