Dissertation topics ideas?

Next year I'll major in English but until then I must write my graduation paper. (about 40 pages)
At the moment I'm at a loss when it comes to topics.
I have a special interest in linguistics and semantics but I need something more specific and less general. So far I've thought of writing about dialects, influences throughout history, varieties of English.
Any help? Thank you!
