Disputed Usages - Urgent! Please help!

Can someone please help pointing out the 'disputed usages' in the following sentences:

1) He was out at a meeting and couldn't be contacted all day.

2) His second plan is not as imaginative as his first but it is more credible.

Thanks. So do you mean both of them have the problem of the missing comma?

That is, the sentences should be rewritten as:

1) He was out at a meeting, and couldn't be contacted all day.

2) His second plan is not as imaginative as his first, but it is more credible.

I once thought #2 had the problem of 'Pronoun whose antecedent is a possessive', my thought is:

I think it is just the commas that would be disputed. The first sentence should have no comma because it is not composed of two independent clauses; the second requires a comma because it is composed of two independent clauses-- though both have a coordinating conjunction.

They could have been presented in reversed relationship, by the way:

What about "not as imaginative as" change to "not so imaginative as". But I can't explain why.

So...as can usually replace as...as in negative statements, but it is just an option.

Remember we need the traditional usage from those prescriptivist. It is nothing with "commas".
