Disparity

If I replaced the word “disparity” in the below sentence with another word – “difference”, would the meaning of this sentence remain the same?

Of the intrinsic differences that separate American from English, the chief have their roots in the obvious disparity between the environment and traditions of the American people since the seventeenth century and those of the English. (Source: The American Language, by H. L. Mencken)
