Could you please teach me how to interpret "folding his hands" in the sentence blow?

"He was thinking about Mary, folding his hands."

The interpretations I can think up:
1. "Folding his arms" is an action, which means "and (then) folded his arms."
2. "Folding his arms" is a state, which means "with his arms folded."
3. "Folding his arms" is continuous actions, which means "and repeated the act of folding his arms."

Is it possible to use "with his arms folded" instead of "folding his arms" without c

No. I mean that he made the motion of folding his arms at some time during the period in which he was thinking about Mary. That's what the sentence meant to me.

I've got what you mean. I think the sentence must be modified.

Thanks.
