Dishes [of food]

(1a) Jack is an excellent chef, who knows how to make delicious dishes of food. (my versions)

(1b) Jack is an excellent chef, who knows how to make delicious dishes. (my friends' versions)

My non-native English-speaking friends think it's wrong to say "dishes of food".

Is my version really wrong? Many thanks for all your help.
