Dish, Meal, Food

Could you please explain, what is the difference between Food, Meal and Dish? It seems to me, that sometimes they are used interchangeably. Thank you.

Top answer

Food is the material we eat; meal is the food eaten at a particular, usually customary, time of day; dish is a specific prepared kind of food. I would think they couldn't be used interchangeably in many situations.
