Dish and meal

Is there a difference between a dish and a meal?
E.g.:
My favorite meal is mushroom soup. Or, my favorite dish is mushroom soup.

Thank you!

Top answer

A dish is one prepared food item - one recipe. A meal often has several dishes. Mushroom soup could be a dish (if part of a larger meal) or a meal on its own, if you don't have other things as well.

A meal contains several dishes, people have three meals each day.
I think 'My favorite food is mushroom soup' is used more often.
