Disgusting

Which of the following sentences is acceptable?

(1) It was a gross to see the filthy and mess in teachers' washroom.

(2) It was disgusting to see the filthy and mess in teachers' washroom.

Neither of the sentences are correct in this instance. (1) has a problem because it uses an unnecessary "Article" that is the "a" in front of gross. Not only this but "filthy and mess" doesn't actually make sense, so you'd need to change the "filthy" to just "filth".
