Both are fine. 'On' possibly sounds more precise.

eg We had a discussion about a lot of stuff.

eg We had a discussion on left-handed Flemish painters of the 17th. century.

1-Discuss as a verb does not need preposition like: We discussed the ethical guidlines in the session.

2-But as a noun can be used both with on & about. like; Let's have a discussion about/on that matter.
