discuss vs. discuss about

Grammatically, it seems only correct to say "Let's discuss the issues", as "discuss" is transitive
However, I heard it so many times people say "Let's discuss about the issues"

Below I quote a sentence from New York Times - Nov. 24, 2006

"On average, Keller Fay finds that people discuss about a dozen brands each day"

Can we use "discuss about" ??

'Dicuss' means 'talk about', so 'discuss about' becomes 'talk about about'. It is not correct to use 'about' with 'discuss'.

It's most likely a mistake caused by negative transfer from a different language, possibly German. In German, "diskutieren" (= discuss) can be used correctly both with and without "über" (= about). If you hear someone say "discuss about", he's most likely a German native speaker.

Hi,

Hi Anon

You should not use "discuss about". For further information about this, please read Clive's response (above).

I agree with what you say about discuss being a transitive verb.
But in a constitution I put in the following.

No member is allowed to discuss about the decisions taken by the Executive Committee under above clause (g) and (h) in public or in the media or in any print or E.

The consensus is that your usage is incorrect. I used to argue about it but I now agree - A.

Edit. Perhaps the distinction would be clear if you were to replace the transitive verb with an intransitive verb like "gossip," which doesn't require an object:

No member is allowed to gossip about the decisions taken by the Executive Committee.

No member is allowed to
