Discuss the question

It's important for politicians to be able to relate to others around them.

I need to discuss this question for the homework, but I don't understand at all. What should I talk about? Could you explain for me or give me the answer as an example? Thank you so much.

The operative definition of 'relate' here is 'feel sympathy for or identify with', where 'identify with' is 'regard oneself as sharing the same characteristics or thinking as others'. In other words, every politician has to be "a people person". What goals do politicians have?
