Hi there,

Is it correct to say "The Blacks were still discriminated." or do you need to say "The blacks were still discriminated against."

Thanks.

It might be better stated: "Blacks still experienced discrimination in various ways," or if a specific discriminatory issue is being referred to, such as housing, "Blacks continued to experience discrimination in housing."

You can go with or without 'against,' but Anonymous is right; it would sound better if you siad an issue.

No. You cannot say that the blacks were discriminated.
You must have the against.

What purpose does it serve? The sentence makes sense and sounds alright to me. I am curious.

Without "against," this doesn't make any sense to me.

Hi guys,

The problem is that 'discriminate' is not a transitive verb.

As there is no direct object, the 'against' is needed in both active and passive forms.

They discriminated against blacks.

Blacks were discriminated against.

Best wishes, Clive
