Discoveries or Discovery?

In regards to a question on the FCE Use of English paper, part 3 word tranformation:

"In recent years these telescopes have been responsible for the discovery of around forty new planets beyond our solar system."

When do you use discoveries and discovery. For me, both could go here, but the answer is discovery, not discoveries.

Please help!

Many thanks,

Anglaise
