Vocabulary

disconnect/detach

Hello,
While watching Tom Cruise's new movie "Edge of Tomorrow" I heard his character "Bill Cage" say "Go for the SUV and don't wait for me. Don't forget to disconnect the caravan before you take off." Would it be correct if I used "detach" instead of "disconnect"?

A side question. Disconnect can be used as a substitute for "shut off", can't it? Can electricity, water, etc be disconnected?

Gene93 Would it be correct if I used "detach" instead of "disconnect"? Yes, but why are you messing with the movie script? Gene93 Disconnect can be used as a substitute for "shut off", can't it?

Yes.

Am I? I did not say that disconnect was wrong and I can't change the movie script. Which one sounds more natural, however?

Tom Cruise, of course.

I am truly sorry for suggesting "detach". Emily Blunt said "unhook", not disconnect Emotion: smile.

Gene93"unhook"
That's a common choice.

I came across unhitch today and I think it might work as well. Is detach least common in your experience?

Gene93 unhitch
That's the one I know personally.

Note that 'caravan' is a BrE term; in AmE it is a 'motor home' or 'house trailer'. So 'disconnect' may be a BrE choice.

Disconnect is correct, but I would use it in a slightly different context. Disconnecting the lights, the electric brake, etc and then unhitch the trailer.

Then why did you bother asking?

I needed someone to confirm that and I am not a native speaker. Anyway, it was more about "detach".
Mister MicawberThen why did you bother asking?
I am sorry if I have angered you. That was the last thing I wanted to do.
