Discard

England batsman Ravi Bopara and India discard Mohammad Kaif will have to provide stability in the middle-order. Kaif, who represented Rajasthan Royals in the inaugural edition of IPL in 2008, would be desperate to get back into the groove after being left in the cold.

Could you please explain to me what "discard" means in this context?

As far as I know "discard" means "to get rid of" and it's a verb. Here it seems it's neither a verb nor an adjective. The meaning also doesn't fit here.

You are right about the meaning of discard. In the sentence discard is in the past tense (not normally used like that - discarded is the norm). It means that India discarded Mohammad Kaif in resent times.
