Director; philosofy, etc.

Can the letter "i" be pronounced tow ways? Like "I" and "ai" ? As in "advertisement" ?

Are there any rules as to when two pronunciations are possible?

Top answer

No English letter has a fixed pronunciation. Pronunciation is dictated by dialect, and we do not reflect any of that in the spellings. Americans pronounce "advetisement" ad-ver-TIZE-ment.

  • Brits make it ad-VERT-izz-m'nt.
  • One way of looking at it is to say that all vowels in unstressed syllables are pronounced as schwas, but the stresses vary from dialect to dialect.

You can check an online dictionary that has audiofiles.

"mobile" and "antivirus" have the same differences.
