Directions for an exercise

Hi teachers,

I have given the following conversation to the students

Don:

Can’t we eat somewhere else besides the hotel, Arthur?

Arthur:

No, we can’t. There isn’t anywhere else as good as the hotel Don. Look, the waiter’s is coming over for our order now.

Waiter:

Good evening. Would you like to order now? I can recommend the roast beef. It’s very good.

Arthur:

No, I’m afraid I don’t like roast beef. Let me see . . . what else have you got on your menu. You order first, Don.

Don:

All right. Roast beef for me, please. But I don’t want any potatoes. I’m trying to lose weight.

Arthur:

I think I’d like some fish. Yes, some Scotch salmon, please.

Waiter:

Er . . . I’m afraid we don’t have any salmon this evening, sir. The roast beef’s really good, sir.

Arthur:

No. If I can’t have any salmon. I’d like some trout.

Waiter:

I’m terribly sorry, sir, but I’m afraid we . . . er . . .

Arthur:

You mean you don’t have any trout, either!

Waiter:

No, sir. I’m afraid not, sir.

Arthur:

Well . . . hmm . . . I suppose you have a fillet of sole, then?

Waiter:

A fillet of sole, sir? Did you say a fillet of sole, sir?

Arthur:

Yes, that’s right, I’d like a fillet of sole with some . . .

Waiter:

There’s very little good sole on the market at this time of the year, sir. You shouldn’t ask for a fillet of sole at this time of the year, sir. Our roast beef is much better, much, much better!! Believe me, sir.

Arthur:

Well, I’m sure it is waiter. But I don’t like roast beef! I’d like . . .

Waiter:

Try the roast beef, sir. You’ll be very happy with our roast beef.

Arthur:

Why? I don’t like roast beef! I never eat roast beef! In fact, I hate roast beef!

Waiter:

Well . . . I’m afraid we haven’t got anything else for dinner, sir.

Then I want them to do this exercise where the underlined and bold words have to be fullfilled by them, but I’m giving the answers to you in order to know what the exercise is about.

MY DOUBT is about which of these two options are the correct ones to ask them to do the exercise:

a) Complete this description of the conversation on page 18. Use the simple present or

the present progressive where necessary.

OR

b) Complete this summary of the conversation on page 18. Use the simple present or

the present progressive where necessary.

Thanks in advance
