Direct vs indirect questions

Hello,

I have a query regarding the following question(s):

'Can I ask you a question?... How do I get to the Manhattan shopping centre?'

This example is stated as being a direct question. I'm aware of the first half being a direct question due to the word order, but I am struggling to understand what makes the second half so?
