direct vs directly

On hearing the news(a) / he went directly(b) / to the Manager's room(c)/ No Error

My book says:- it should be 'direct' instead of 'directly'

Please tell me the difference.

As a BrE speaker, I perceive "directly" to have a stronger nuance of "immediately", and "direct" to have a stronger nuance of "taking the shortest route".
