Direct to Indirect

Changing it into indirect speech , which is right?
Q : He said, " Sam walked away when he saw the crowd. "
A1 : He said (that) Sam had walked away when he had seen the crowd. "
or
A2 : He said (that) Sam had walked away when he saw the crowd."

I always have problem when there are two past tenses in one direct speech.
Thank you.

Anonymous I always have problem when there are two past tenses in one direct speech. Use A2. The second past perfect regresses that verb even more than the first past perfect verb.

Thanks, Mr M. That was my choice, but I wouldn't have been able to put into words the reason.
