Direct speech

Is the usage of direct speech below OK?

I was asked 'Excuse me, but could you trun down the radio?'
I was told 'Excuse me, but could you turn down the radio?'

I see nothing wrong, except that I believe you should use commas after "I was asked/told."

My dictionary says that with ask/tell, when used in direct speech, the subect and verb usually have to come after the comment as:

'Excuse me, but could you trun down the radio?', I was asked/told.

I'll agree that it would help to make a contrast between direct and indirect.
But often in writing a narrative you get desperate for ways to avoid repeating the same pattern over and over again.
