Direct Quotes - ellipsis and square brackets

"Firstly, talk to him and see if you can come to an agreement."

a) Jim said, " ... [t]alk to him and see if you can come to an agreement."

b) Jim said, "[t]alk to him and see if you can come to an agreement."

In a) I have included ellipsis to show I have omitted words from the beginning of the sentence.

In both a) and b) I have used square brackets to indicate I have changed the letter 't' to lowercase,

What is the correct way to punctuate this sentence?
