Direct or Indirect

Dear teachers,

Is the sentence below an example of Indirect speech? If yes, how would we convert it into direct speech?

The student flatly denied that he had copied in the examination hall.

Would it be correct if I said;
- The student flatly denied, "I didn't copy in the examination hall." ?

Thanks
