Direct object and indirect object

Hello,

I've a question to ask about "direct object" and "indirect object". "I gave John (indirect object) a book (direct object)". It's possible to change the position of "direct" and "indirect" object to become "I gave a book (indirect object) to John (indirect object). When we change the position of "direct" and "indirect" object, we have to use the preposition "to".

What about this?: "The student asked me (indirect object) a question (direct object)." Why can't we change the position of direct and indirect object to: "The student asked a question to me."?
Thanks for the reading!
