What is the direct object in this sentence. The dog bit the mail carrier....is it carrier or mail carrier?

If the modifying word were an actual adjective (new, tall, ugly), the direct object would be carrier. However, mail is a noun linked so closely to the word, mail carrier is considered the direct object.
