Direct/ Indirect Object

"The father gave the little boy a spanking." One outstanding contributor recently used a similar sentence and said that the direct object was "the little boy." I assume that the gentleman was rushed for time and accidentally made a mistake. Surely, the direct object is "a spanking." The indirect object is "the little boy." (The father gave a spanking TO the little boy.) Please reassure me that the gentleman just made a mistake. None of us is/are perfect! Thank you.

I may be the guilty culprit of whom you speak. That sounds like a sentence I wrote recently. [Y] If you can find it, send me the post # and I'll correct it if there isn't already discussion about it.
