Direct indirect narration?

Hi, everyone.

Direct speech: John says, " I am happy that my brother has started helping me."

Indirect speech: John tells that he is happy that his brother has started helping him.

Is the indirect speech correct or should I write: ........had started helping him.....?

Thanks!

had started helping him.....? You don't need to back shift because the reporting verb is in present tense. John says (tell requires the object, for example, tells me/us etc) that he is happy that his brother has started helping him.

  • had started helping him.....?
