Direct /indirect?

Do we change the reported verb when the sentence reports general habits of a person? for example-
He said."I do not usually wear shirt at night".
He said that he do/did not usually wear shirt at night .

Top answer

He said , "I don't usually wear a shirt at night". He said that he doesn't/didn't usually wear a shirt at night. -- Both are OK if the condition still obtains, but native speakers normally regress the reported verb to the past.
