Direct questions are actual questions, e.g., "Why did you do that?"

Indirect questions are declaratives, e.g., "I wonder if she will be all right."

Indirect questions do not take question marks, and unlike direct questions, they never begin with an interrogative—e.g., "why," "who," or what"—or inversion.
