Dipthong help

Hello,

I am currently studying about dipthongs and have the following questions:

1. On a recent quiz, I was told 'climb' is a dipthong. How is that possible as the word doesn't have two vowels in it? Don't dipthong words have two vowel letters in them?

2. What is a handy way I can identify a dipthong (e.g. a list of sounds / example words, etc.)?

Many kind thanks in advance to whoever can help me answer the aforementioned questions.

The dipthong is the long i sound: i. We can write the pronunciation as /ay/ or /ai/, which combines two vowel sounds. The vowel sound of "climb" is the dipthong.

It's spelled diphthong.

American English has five diphthongs. Symbolized in the International Alphabet (IPA), they are

/e?/ /a?/ /??/ /a?/ /o?/

An oft-quoted phrase that uses all five is "No highway cowboys".

/?no? 'ha?we? 'ka?b??z/

There's also "The brown soil at Pine Cone Lake".

/ð? 'bra?n 's??l æt 'pa?n ?ko?n 'le?k/
