dinner vs lunch

The midday meal is often called "dinner" especially if it is the main meal of the day. People who are "higher" in the social scale usually call it "lunch."

What do you think about this definition of "dinner" by Michael SWAN.

1. Which one do you use more often for the midday meal in England?
2. Does it differ in AmE?

Hi, Yes, I see this as a very British-oriented definition. If I may express a possibly controversial opinion, I think distinctions and concerns related to social scale (or perhaps more commonly, 'social class' ) are more common in British English and in the British outlook in general. Other people may disagree with me, perhaps very strongly.

Anon, this has been discussed for pages and pages and PAGES on here. If you use the search box in the upper right corner, you'll find MORE than you ever wanted to read on this.

The vast majority of Americans eat lunch for their midday meal. It varies regionally whether they have supper of dinner for their evening meal.
