Dinner on the fly

Hi,

I'd be so thankful if anybody help me to make out of the following italicized part:

"It's dinner on the fly because somebody has to be at choir practice at 7 P.M."

My speculation is that since the mother is so busy with her children's stuff so she has to have her dinner in rush. Is my surmise right?

Regards,

Iman

The phrase "on the fly" implies something being done spontaneously or quickly. Your assumption is correct.

Yes I think your "surmise" is right. a dinner on the fly, means a dinner on a rush. Because "being on the fly" means "being hurried" up or rushed
