Diminish vs. deplete

Hi

I assume that the underlined words are essentially synonymous, except for the fact that the first is an intransitive verb while the other is not. Could you please give your opinion?

Our supplies were diminishing rapidly. (intransitive verb)

Our supplies were getting depleted rapidly. (transitive verb)

Thanks,

Tom
