Diminish or diminishing?

Hi,

I would like to know if the following sentence is correct or should I, instead of, ", thereby diminishing" write ", and diminish"? If they both are okay I would like to stick to what I have written below.

They indulge in all sorts of reckless antics, thereby diminishing their chances of selection.

Thanks
