dig yourself in a hole or for yourself

Which is correct?

He's really dug a hole for himself.
He's dug himself in a hole.

According to my dictionary:

He has dug himself into a hole.

He's dug himself into a hole is a common version.
He's really dug a hole for himself sounds OK too.
He's dug himself in a hole sounds a little odd.

I would say "dug himself into a hole". Otherwise they are both correct, and mean much the same thing, except that in this case you have added an emphasising "really" to one but not the other for no obvious reason.
