Dig deeper

Hi,

Could you help me find a few more synonyms for dig deeper?

"Instead of only covering the basic rules of etiquette, he should have dug deeper/delved into more detail/taken it one step further/looked beneath the surface."

I tried to think of more, but my brain started resisting. Emotion: big smile

It'd be great if you could help me out.

Thank you.
