Difficulty in memorizing new vocabulary

Dear friends,

I'm an Indonesian who is currently living and teaching in China.

I have some difficulties asking my Chinese students to memorize new vocabularies.

As Indonesian, it's much easier for me to learn and memorize new vocabularies, because some of indonesian words are similar to English, both the pronouncition and meaning. Meanwhile for my students, they have to memorize letter by letter...and it's very frustating for all of us.

Do you have any ideas how to solve my problems?

Thanks a lot ^^

warm regards,

ila

Hello, Ila - and welcome to English Forums. I am afraid that I have no specific 'bright ideas' for you, but many languages are quite different and the task is still accomplished by learners. You say 'memorize letter by letter' and that worries me a bit.

  • Learning spelling and pronunciation is not the same as learning meaning, and those two functions should be kept distinct.
  • If they cannot use the Roman alphabet, then your students will need some training in phonics.

Thanks a lot for your reply and ideas.

I forgot to write that my students can memorize the meaning and the pronounciation very well.

Our biggest challenge is in spelling. Everytime I ask them to spell, they will get frustrated

Spelling can be learnt just like we native speakers learn it: frequent spelling tests. When I was in elementary school, I could look forward to a comprehensive spelling test every Friday.

Thanks for your advice.

Indeed, every week we have a spelling test.

So in other words, there's no certain method which can be used to easy spelling.....(?)

Hmmm....ok then, once again....thanks a lot for your kind attention

There is no easy spelling in English. All you can do is help students recognize a few forms that frequently appear ('i' after 'e', silent 'e' at word ends, doubled consonants when forming participles, etc.)
