difficult to be understand

I'm from South Korea.
"This article is difficult to understand."
"This article is difficult to be understood."
Which sentence do you think more natural and right?
I think both are grammarically right. But I've hardly heard someone say the latter sentence. And an English teacher (who is also Korean) said the latter sentence is wrong. Is he right?
Or both of them are acceptable to native speakers?
