Difficult sentences

1- After the festival, the food and drink are given ......to the poor.

a) out b) away

2- The shop is.......a pen with each book that you buy.

a) out b) away

3- Peter, as well as his sisters.......absent today.

a) is b) are

My answer

1- (a) & (b) are OK

2- (a) & (b) are OK . In fact, the difference between 'give away' and 'give out' is not clear when they are used to express the idea that something is given for free.

3- (b)

Both work. "Out" suggests that the poor are right there at the time to recieve the food, but "hand out" is more usual in that context, I think. "Away" is more vague but more idiomatic.
