Difficult sentence to understand

Hi everyone,

Can you help me to understand the following sentence? Especially the underlined part.

"In May 1827, with the tunnel now well out into the river, the ground behind the poling boards became so liquid that it forced its way through the gaps between the boards."

Also, are both parts informally written?

Thank you.

By that time, the tunnel extended a considerable distance under the river. Probably the pressure of the water/rock/mud/soil above forced the very soft soil or mud through the gaps. It is not informal writing.

The tunnel was being constructed below the river. It was partly completed from one shore into the river bed.
