Difficult sentence to understand

Hello everyone,

Could you help to understand what "jack forward" means in the following sentence?

"When the miners in a cell had excavated behind their boards, their frames could be laboriously jacked forward those nine inches. In this way, the whole tunneling machine could move inexorably and safely on while masons trailed behind, shoring up the newly exposed tunnel with bricks."

Thank you!

A jack is a machine that usually moves something heavy (like a car) upwards (vertically).

The jack described in your sentences moves something heavy (like boards) forwards (horizontally).
