Difficult sentence.. the singular of a seemingly plural.

Which one is it correct? The second one sounds good, but by reading it, it sounds weird.

1 - The vast majority of humans always waste their lives and energy in superficial tasks.

2 - The vast majority of humans always wastes their lives and energy in superficial tasks.

Thanks!

"wastes" sounds most unnatural to me. I would only use "waste". "waste s their live s " is in any case an illogical combination of singular and plural.
